The
Meadows At Sixmile Creek
Welcome to the league at 6-Mile! Our league will play on Tuesday nights for 12 weeks (May 17 through August 2). We have a shotgun start so we start walking to our holes at 5:00. The starting holes will be posted in the clubhouse every Tuesday at about 4:30. Scorecards for each foursome will be available there. There are two ladies’ leagues on Tuesday night so if you don’t find your name on the list, check for another table with our information. If your team scorecard is there, please take it with you.
Stroke Rule – Pace of Play
In order to keep pace of play, please limit yourself to 10 strokes per hole. After 10 strokes, you should pick up your ball and allow the rest of your foursome to complete the hole. Record a 10 on your scorecard and strive to minimize the number of holes in which you are forced to pick up. Pace of play is important to all of our players. Keep up with the group ahead of you. The ranger may ask your whole group to skip a hole if you fall behind.
Team Play
You have been randomly assigned to a two-person team. Each week your team has the opportunity to earn points through match and medal play. At the end of the season, we give prizes based on team points. You are paired up with a different opponent each week. This is a 4-point system with 2 points awarded for “match” and 2 points for “medal”. In the event of a tie, 1 point is awarded to each player. If you do not show up for golf or get a sub, you forfeit all 4 points.
The clubhouse will record the points through the season but you can monitor your progress by using the method outlined here.
“Medal” play (also known as stroke play) is played by keeping track of all your strokes the normal way. Your strokes are totaled at the end of play to get a gross score. Next you calculate your net score (9 hole gross score less 9 hole handicap). Whoever has the lower net score wins the 2 points for medal play.
“Match” play considers every hole as a self-contained contest. The person with the lower net score on a hole wins that hole. The person at the end of play who has won the most holes gets 2 points.
Consider this example:
Stella has a 9-hole handicap of 15.
Frances has a 9-hole handicap of 10.
Thus, Stella is given 5 strokes.
To determine which holes get those strokes, refer to the “ladies handicap” line on the scorecard. Each role is rated 1 through 19 with 1 being the most difficult. When playing 9 holes, find the lowest number and mark the scorecard with a dot to indicate which holes the player gets the stroke on. In this example, Stella would mark 5 holes and reduce her strokes on those holes by 1.
Match and medal play is fun because it allows players of all abilities to enjoy competitive play. If you will miss a week, please do your best to find a sub or you will forfeit all four possible points.
In addition to Match and Medal, we also have a Ringer Challenge. There will be a poster on the front bulletin board with everyone’s name on it. On the first and second nights of league, enter your hole-by-hole score on this poster in pencil and enter the total on the top side of the diagonal line in the score box in ink. On subsequent nights, compare your hole-by-hole score to what is posted. If you improved on a hole, erase that score and pencil in the better one. Do not change your total, just the improved hole score. Your starting 9 hole score stays the same through the season. At the end of the season, we will total the new scores and award prizes for most improved and lowest scores, both net and gross.
Scorecards and Handicap
All EWGA members who purchased the WSGA handicap option have been booked for the handicap through the Meadows. You can either post your score on the computer at the Meadows or you can do it online at home. It is your responsibility to enter your own score whether you use WSGA or EWGA. Pro shop staff will be available to assist you with the WSGA process. The EWGA website can help with posting in that system. Since our competitions are handicap dependent, please use one system or the other to record your scores. Please turn your scorecard in to the league captain or the person acting on her behalf.
Rain/Bad Weather
Always assume that we are playing. If the weather is bad all day, we will try to get a decision on play as soon as possible and send an e-mail to regulars and subs. In general, unless there is a lot of standing water or lightening, we will play. The decision will be made by 3:30 so expect an e-mail at that time or call the course at 849-9000 after 3:30 and ask if EWGA is playing. If it is raining, and you decide not to play, you are not offered a rain check. If we call the league off, there will be rain checks issued.
Substitutes
It is your responsibility to find a substitute if you are unable to play. To find a sub, log on to the EWGA Madison website and click on “request a sub”. You are given the option to select the Meadows at 6-mile Creek Tuesday Sub List. Insert your request regarding which league, the date you need a sub and whether you want to be reimbursed or not and the system sends the request directly to the names on the 6-mile sub list. If you have a sub, please e-mail the league captain so that we can watch for your sub. Many times the sub forgets the name of the person they are subbing for. It makes it easier if we know to expect them.
Check-in
There is no need to formally check in for league, just take a look in the clubhouse to see what your starting hole is. If the scorecard for your group is there, pick it up so you have the official scorecard. Always arrive early and be ready to start to your hole at 5:00.
Stick Around After Golf
If possible, join your fellow league members for food and beverage in the clubhouse following golf. This is a great way to relax and meet some new friends!
This is YOUR league – have fun and please share your feedback on what you like, dislike, etc. so that we can make improvements each year. Feel free to contact me at any time! Enjoy.
