EWGA Madison Chapter Newsletter
September 2008
A Message from the President
I can't believe that fall is already here and the golf season is coming to a close. Summer really flew by, as it usually does. And the EWGA year is coming to a close, too, at the end of the month.
I've greatly enjoyed serving as President over the past year. Of course, I couldn't have done it without all of the amazing volunteers. I encourage all of you to attend the year-end volunteer recognition event on October 3rd at The Meadows whether you have volunteered or not. What better way to wrap up the year than to spend an afternoon golfing followed by good food and good company.
Also coming up is the international EWGA Championship in Aloha, Oregon. If you run into Sarah DeKraay, Ginger Zimmerman, Shelly Armstrong and Terri Redmond before the end of the month, wish them well in their efforts to defend their title as Scramble Team Champs!
I hope you all enjoyed the events and leagues provided over the past year. You'll be receiving a survey via e-mail in October. Please complete the survey so we know what we're doing right and what we should change next year.
Signing off,
Anita Schleicher Mahamed 2007-2008 EWGA Madison Chapter President
EVENTS By Sarah DeKraay (events chair)
The Good, Bad and the Ugly event was a great success and was played on a beautiful summer day July 24. It was held at the Meadows of Sixmile Creek and was filled two weeks previous to the event. This event is held in conjunction with the Business Forum and participants were evenly distributed among both the EWGA and the Business Forum members. There were over 80 participants that were at this nine hole event and everyone socialized and networked after the event in the clubhouse.
The Badger Cup is an annual event among the four EWGA chapters- Madison, Fond du lac, Fox Cities/Green Bay. It was hosted at the Bull, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on August 2. It was widely attended and each chapter brought several teams. It was a team event that consisted of two person teams competing in a Ryder cup format. The Milwaukee chapter won the event.
The EWGA Charity event was held on August 13 with over 100 players participating at Sixmile Creek in Waunakee. The silent auction items and prizes were outstanding. There were several volunteers that came to the event and assisted with all the prizes. The beneficiary of the 2008 charity golf outing was the American Heart Association- Madison Chapter, go Red for women. This event was sponsored by the EWGA was able to raise $10,000 for the Women in Red campaign! Special thanks goes to Roxanne Wenzel, Krista Schmidt and Shelly Armstrong for making this wonderful event go so smoothly and being so well organized.
On September 26 and 27th, the EWGA Madison chapter will have four competitors (Terri Redmond, Shelly Armstrong, Ginger Zimmerman and Sarah DeKraay) competing in the EWGA national tournament in Aloha Oregon. The scramble team will be defending their fourth national title. Last year in Nashville Tennessee, the team won by an outstanding 10 strokes. This will be their last year competing in this event.
The end of year event is scheduled for October 3 at Six Mile Creek in Waunakee. This event has a nine hole and 18 hole option and is a fun event to celebrate. The Board of the EWGA hosts the event and there is a dinner associated with the event. This event gives the board of EWGA an opportunity to thank the volunteers and board members. It is a great way to end the season. Please sign up on line for this fantastic event.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the events committee this year, along with Debbie Kaltenberg. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the chance to meet new faces and play golf with different EWGA members at several new courses. I look forward to next season as the Vice President.
Chapter Championship By Jeanne Whitish, Past President
As the date for the EWGA Championship moves closer, our Madison Chapter Scramble team comprised of Ginger Zimmerman, Sarah DeKraay, Shelley Armstrong, and Terri Redmond is preparing for the trip along with a few EWGA friends who are accompanying them to be there very own gallery, I reflect a bit on my own past experiences with this unique opportunity provided by EWGA.
In June this past summer the journey began, with our Chapter Championship. The term championship tends to imply hard core competition, and it has been a personal goal of mine to try and encourage new, experienced, and intermediate players to give our Chapter Championship a try. It is truly a lot of fun, and only increases in entertainment value as more people participate. Realizing that some people simply don't like to compete, it may feel intimidating, but really doesn't need to be. I first entered the Championship series while in 4th Flight with a handicap of 41, which means on average I was 65+ for a 9 hole round. I happened to move on that year to Regionals which were in Iowa, and imagine my surprise when I advanced to finals in Phoenix. Our current scramble team has been defending our great Madison Chapter for the last 3 years, and September 26, 2008 will enter the finals yet another time in Beaverton, Oregon.
The real story is in the friendships and relationships that develop during the process of the competition. First locally, our Chapter Championship is a great way for people to try it, see if they like it, and if they happen to be either the low gross score (total strokes taken), or low net score (total strokes - your current handicap index), move on to the Regional event, which this year was held at Grand Geneva, in Lake Geneva, almost in our backyard. The regional event is an 18 hole round also, totally broken down by skill levels, or flights. You are placed within a group of women from the Midwest area who typically play golf at a very similar level to yourself. From that event, once again, the low gross and low net score will advance to the Final EWGA Championship, which is a 2 day event, 18 holes each day, and always on a very nice golf course that typically you wouldn't likely even think to play.
The EWGA Championship series is the largest amateur women's golf event currently, and I've had the pleasure to meet some of the nicest women through the process, and enjoy the spirit of the game throughout the process.
For all of you who have participated in the past, I hope you'll consider entering the Chapter Championship in 2009, for any of you who haven't, I would highly recommend it. For all of you, wish your fellow EWGA members good luck in Beaverton, OR, for the EWGA Finals!
EWGA Charity Golf Outing
EWGA Madison Chapter held our charity golf outing this year to benefit the American Heart Association, Go Red For Women. The outing was held on Wednesday, August 13th at The Meadows of Sixmile Creek and over 100 golfers joined in the event.
The day was quite fun with plenty of hole events, prizes, sponsored tee games, a silent auction and raffle. We started the day with a delicious lunch in the clubhouse and were led in stretching exercises by Orange Shoe Gym before going out on the course. EWGA and Madison Golf and Development served heart-healthy red wine on the 10th tee and Biaggi's served up some very tasty Sangria on the first hole. We also enjoyed chocolates and ice cream on the course while we battled for the win.
After golf, we headed into the clubhouse for a fantastic buffet while we listened to a moving story by a heart disease survivor. The day was a huge success and together we contributed over $10,000 to the Go Red For Women movement. Go Red For Women had a goal of reducing cardiovascular disease in women by the year 2010 and due to events such as ours, has already reached their goal earlier this year! Save the date for next year. We will be back again to benefit Go Red For Women on Wednesday August 12, 2009 at The Meadows of Sixmile Creek.

A Message from our Sponsor - The See Team, Jacci See, First Weber Group
What would you do with $7500? Well, there has never been a better time to buy your first home and the newly approved tax credit for first-time buyers is like having a 15 year, interest-free loan! The down payment and closing costs may actually be less than the credit the buyer receives.
For members who already own their home, this is good news in that this may be the incentive needed for a buyer for your home, enabling you to get that move-up home you been wanting. With great interest rates available today and realistic house prices, our Madison area market is healthy (in direct contrast to what you may hear from the media). I'd love to tell you more! Feel free to visit our website at www.SeeMadisonRealty.com or call me at 608-828-5105.
