EWGA Madison Chapter Newsletter
August 2010
A Message from the President
It is hard to believe that the season is more than half over and the charity event has come and gone. After a successful kickoff at the Monona Terrace, we started the season with more members, new league venues, several social events and several golf education events on the calendar.
In February, we had some board members meet with the other board members from the Fox cities chapter and the Milwaukee chapter to discuss new ideas and ways to increase membership and chapter development. It was very successful and everyone came away from the meeting motivated to implement the things they learned.
The EWGA National conference was held in Pinehurst, North Carolina in March, 2010. We had four of our members attend the five day event. They shared their experience with the Board when they returned and everyone had a great time. Besides the golf, there were several round table events and social networking events. Next year, the national conference will be held at Amelia Island and they are all planning on attending the event.
On October 1 and 2, the EWGA National Championship will be held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Having competed in five national championships, I am looking forward to the competition in our home state of Wisconsin. AHQ is looking for volunteers, so if anyone is interested, you can contact them at the website: EWGA.com This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our fantastic chapter and it is going to be a great social and networking opportunity as well. The National championship has several hundred competitors from all across the country and is considered the largest amateur event in the world.
The fall leagues are getting ready to start and we still have the year end event, along with the Volunteer recognition dinner. I would recommend to anyone that they volunteer to participate on the Board of Directors, since it gives you a chance to meet other women in the community that love to play golf and socialize, and it involves time well spent.
As my Presidential term winds down and comes to a close, I would like to say how much I have enjoyed serving as President and getting to know so many different women in the community that I would not have gotten to know otherwise. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.
Sarah DeKraay 2010 EWGA Madison Chapter President

2010 Golfpalooza in Pinehurst, North Carolina
Kristi Brererton, Cindy Schmelzer, Barb Severson, and Jeanne Whitish attended this year's EWGA National Conference at the legendary Pinehurst Resort. We were up early, busy all day, 54 holes of golf, cocktails, new friends, great connections, lots of laughs, and an electric group of women! It was a great opportunity to become familiar with the EWGA organization, learn what other chapters are doing, and bring back ideas to strengthen our own chapter. The women we golfed with were from the four corners of the country with diverse backgrounds and interests, save one - we all love golf! Cindy's scramble team took second place in the Race for the Cure event and she also met Annika Sorenstam and has the photo to prove it! Jeanne won her flight in individual stroke play. We watched Suzann Pettersen and Jean Bartholomew 'hit the crap out of it' on the driving range which was awesome and attended a cocktail reception where Pam Swenson presented Annika with the EWGA Leadership Award. Kristi said 'I am looking forward to keeping the energy alive within our Madison Chapter and will be happy to share more about the conference with anyone interested.' We came home tired, but pumped up. It was an honor to represent our Chapter at this event, and we'd all go again!

Golf Events
It is an exciting year for me, my first year on the EWGA Madison Board as Golf Events Chair. Our goal for this year is to provide a variety of offerings to appeal to all levels of golfer and to encourage participant by members and guests. Our best endorsement of the quality of our membership is a guest of one of our members having a great time and sharing the news with their friends, and so on. Invite someone to the party and join us for a competitive or fun event this season!
We have a June traveling event to Old Hickory Golf Club in Beaver Dam scheduled on June 27th. What a great opportunity to play a practice round for The Badger Cup that comes later this summer! I've not had a chance to play Old Hickory and I am looking forward to it, the course description sounds like it will be worth the trip. Registration is open for this event, tee times to come soon.
July will be busy with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly joint event with The Business Forum on July 22nd. This event is held at Meadows of Six Mile in Waunakee, and it fills up fast! It is a nine hole scramble, I've played in it and it's a blast! Nice networking opportunity and another chance to share how fun EWGA membership can be. We also have a traveling event scheduled at Windwood of Watertown on July 18th and are planning on having members from our sister chapters in Milwaukee and Fox Valley join us for some fun.
Last but not least on July 24th is the CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP to be held this year at Door Creek! Both individual stroke play and scramble teams are eligible, please contact Terri Courtney, Ginger Zimmerman, or Kristi Brereton if you are interested in learning more. We'll be visiting each league to share more information about this event. The REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BOTH IN WISCONSIN THIS YEAR (have you heard that already?) and we hope to have a nice representation from Madison's Chapter!
August - The Badger Cup, THE CHARITY EVENT benefitting Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation, and a traveling event to Edelweiss!
September - Regional Semi-finals and a traveling event to Wild Rock!
October - National Championship in Lake Geneva and Fall Fiasco at Vitense!
We are happy to hear comments and answer questions regarding the events planned. Feel free to contact me at kbrereton@johnsonbank.com.

Did you know- Members Only section on website??
As an EWGA Madison Member there are several great features on our website that you can use. By going to our website (www.ewgamadison.org) and selecting the Members Only link, you are able to log in using your name and password to access these great features. One feature I would like to highlight is the Bulletin Board. This is a great forum for members to post important information. Please log in periodically and check the postings out! As always, any questions can be directed back to me at webmaster@EWGAMadison.com.

Handicaps
Why have a handicap? A handicap index allows all golfers, no matter what level, the opportunity to compete in a fair match at any golf course. If you are new to EWGA, we strongly encourage you to start entering your scores each week into the computer at your league course to establish a handicap. You don't have to be an expert to have a handicap. The handicap system allows all of us to play together. If you've played in a charity golf outing, they may have asked for your handicap so your scramble team can play against the other groups. Please see our website for info on handicap, and how to enter scores on the WSGA (Wisconsin State Golf Association) website. You can enter scores at most local courses, or you can enter online.
http://www.ewgamadison.org/pages/handicapinfo.cfm
If you have shared the league with someone else, probably only one of you have been signed up with WSGA for a handicap, because there is a fee involved to be a WSGA member. However, all members of EWGA could establish their handicap on the EWGA website. Log onto your membership on www.ewga.com and then click on 'handicap' and you can enter your scores on this site. This is included in your EWGA membership.
Having a handicap makes the game more fun! Don't forget to enter your scores!

Are you a Fairway Friend?
Are you interested in helping other members gain experience and confidence on the golf course? Would you like someone to show you the ropes on the golf course? If so, EWGA's Fairway Friends program could be for you. Experienced golfers are partnered with new golfers to help them feel comfortable.
A mentor guides a new golfer on pace of play, basic rules, and proper etiquette on and off the golf course.
A mentee is someone making the transition from instruction to playing on a golf course who would like a comfortable environment to ask questions.
If you are interested in being a mentor or mentee, please sign up via the Web site. The link is found under Education - Lessons and Clinics. We currently have a number of mentors waiting to be matched up, so sign up today.

Pilates for Golfers
You know Pilates is very popular but did you know there are benefits to your golf game? If enough members are interested, a session will be held in Madison. Pilates builds strength while simultaneously increasing stability, flexibility, balance, and core control which are the elements essential for a good golf swing while reducing the risk of injury and back pain. If you are interested, please e-mail Cindy Schmelzer at cschmelzer_1@charter.net.

Updating Your Contact Information
If you have a change in your name, address, phone or e-mail address it is very easy to update. All of our database information comes from the Headquarters database, so a change there is all you need to do. Once you change the information at HQ, our system will get the new information in a week or so. Log into the 'members only' area of the www.ewga.com website. When you have logged on, just click on My Information on the left side of the screen. All of your information will appear. To make changes, click on edit information. Make the changes there. If you prefer, you can call 800-407-1477 x 10 and make the changes over the phone. However, using the website is much quicker and more accurate. Updated contact information ensures that you are up to date on all that is going on locally and at AHQ so you can take full advantage of your membership.
